DISCWORLD DAY.

5 December 1998
The Grainstore, Oakham.
Near Stamford.

We only heard about this at the last minute, so only a few Club members could get along, but what a day we had. Held in The Grainstore, (a brew-pub that makes some fine ales), when we arrived at 10:30 Clarecraft from Suffolk were setting up its dealers-table. This filled one end of the bar and displayed many rare or deleted pieces. Beside them one of the companies painters demonstrated her talents. Also at that end of the bar was a table for the Pratchett fanzine "The Wizards Knob" and a table for a local bookshop.

The bar opened at 11, allowing us to sample some of the on-site brewed bitters. I stayed on the lower gravity 'Cooking' while Bakul was more adventurous. At 11:30 Dave Hodges turned up. He is the basis of the character Hodgesaargh in a couple of Discworld books and with him was another character, Lady Jane. This noble bird is a Common Buzzard around 4O years old. Not bad when most Common Buzzards live to between 15-17 years. Dave has written a booklet as the character Hodgesaargh and did a brisk trade selling copies. About this time Stephen Briggs appeared. He has had stage adaptations performed and published of Terry's work as well as overseeing the maps and the Discworld Companion.

Around midday Terry himself turned up. As the attendance was quite small, (a combination of being a secret and the first snows of winter), instead of a queue forming, Terry came round to see everyone.

The afternoon saw frantic trading at the Clarecraft stand with bargains to be had. A performance on the Steel pans of well-known tunes provided an interesting entertainment.

In all a relaxed and enjoyable day. We both came home with bottles of "Alberts Drip" - a Pratchett themed tipple brewed at The Grainstore. I haven't tasted it yet, but at 5% I'll need a free afternoon to do so.
