THE AVENGERS
The T.V. series was set in a surreal never-land of impossible primary colours, and the film continued this theme. In a quintessentially British world Emma Peel is Principle Boy, Mother is Dame and John Steed both Prince Charming and Buttons, destined never to marry Cinders. With Bentley's and Jags the movie moves apace. Bringing the two main characters together for the first time and pitting them against the scene-stealing Sean Conery as the evilly entering stage-left August De Winter. Only in a British romp would the villain be subverting the weather. Well, It's just not cricket, is it?
The few faults this has arise from the clipping of the occasional scene that latter action depends upon. The double-entendres, the silent side-kicks, the streets devoid of Hoi Poloi, m'm, a film worthy of its sixties parentage.
I doubted Ralph Fiennes could fill the suit, (too scrawny), but Uma is a fine Emma.
