DEEP CRIMSON.
(Profundo Carmesi)
Directed by Arturo Ripstein.
Desperate for each other, the two central characters - a vain gigolo (Daniel Gimenez Cacho) who knits while his sluttish girlfriend (Regina Orozco) selects his next victim - become serial killers to keep themselves together. But this is no MTV murder-feast as entertainment, eschewing the fast cut and rapid pace that make murders into music videos, here the shots are long, the pans are slow, the realism heightened. The terrible crimes are made worse by the feeling of time.
Inspired by the actual 'Lonely Hearts Killers', upon whom the 1969 film 'The Honeymoon Killers' was also based, this movie also reminded me of the British couple Brady and Hindly. This film, while violent, can never be seen, as glorifying murder as some might accuse other films or doing.
