DEAD FUNNY

Script by Terry Johnson
Directed by Bruce James

The play is set around the time of the deaths of Benny Hill and Frankie Howerd and features the members of a comedy appreciation society. Unfortunately, I didn't like Benny Hill and Frankie Howerd wasn't the genius some people think, in my opinion'. The play focuses on the interactions of a group of people brought together by a common interest, (this could easily have been SF rather than comedy) and one couples marriage is not so much on the rocks as sinking fast.

What brought me to the play was that Mary Tamm was in it. Best known for playing the first Romana in Dr. Who as well as guest appearances in a handful of other series. She was fine as the woman trying to save her marriage and conceive, though her priority was not necessarily in that order. To the enjoyment of a proportion of the audience she ended up in stockings and suspenders after a custard pie fight. But then there was a nude man at the beginning of the play.

If you like the style of comedy as presented by Benny Hill, you'll enjoy this play. The writer has recently had a play produced about the Carry-On films. Not something I'll rush to see but if this play was anything to go by, it'll be well written with interesting characterisation.
