LIVE BED SHOW
By Arthur Smith
Key Theatre, 8 Sept '98.
This is a good comedy about a couple who meet, stay difficult friends, fall in love and fall into bed in their flats, in Lanzarotte, (Loughborough painted white) and in a Department Store after closing time. As so much occurs in bed, a large part of what we see are their dreams and nightmares.
The show, previously performed by Paul Merton and Caroline Quentin, was played by Toyah Wilcox, (genre work includes the film Jubilee, T.V. work on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Ink Thief and the radio production of Independence Day UK); and Joe McGann, (the Chronicles of Narnia and the forthcoming First Frontier). The understudies include Jo Castleton who is in the Dr. Who spin-off video Auton 2.
After the play I asked Joe McGann about First Frontier and he enthused about it saying he has known Jim Mortimore for years and expects it to be great omen. I also asked him what Honor Blackman was like to work with on The Upper Hand.
"Barking"
Nice barking?
"Barking barking"
When Toyah was asked about her ambitions she reeled off quiet a list. Her father became bankrupt when she was seven and she wants to buy back his factories for him; she wants to buy the Birmingham Old Vic Theatre where she studied and she wants to become a sculptor, having met Elizabeth Frink shortly before she died. "Which is why you see me in everything." When asked if she still tours with her band, she revealed they play most Sunday nights at a Butlins in the Family Room to 5000 people. So that's what happens to old punks!
