In the early days of the SF Club the main games that were played were D&D and the board game Cosmic Encounter. By the mid-eighties this had expanded to include Traveller, Call of Cthulhu, Runequest, Rolemaster, Bunnies & Burrows and many more.
In 1988 the then local specialist shop, the Peterborough Dungeon, organised 'Games Fest' in Bretton, Peterborough. At this event, the Club demonstrated a game featuring 'Aliens', 'Cybermen' and 'Dinosaurs'. In 1991, as part of the Club's Fifteenth anniversary celebrations, it, and the Peterborough Dungeon, co-sponsored a figure-painting competition. The following year we again co-operated on the First Peterborough Fantasy Fair. This has become a yearly event which features demonstrations of games, displays by the local Viking Society and dealers offering a variety of related merchandise.
Club demonstrations at the Fantasy Fairs have included a Fantasy Wargame using the 'Hoards of the Things' rules; a 'Starfleet Battles' display; an Alien games based on Leading Edge's system; The 'Space Battles' card game; and most recently a game using '64 style Daleks attempting to correct a reactor failure while pesky Thals and mutant monsters come out of the jungle.
We have also had guests who have been connected with gaming. Brian Craig, Ian Watson and Jack Yeovil had all written Games Workshop novels. Other guests include Joe Dever, who writes the 'Lone Wolf' adventure books, Martin Hackett (another games designer), and Oliver Johnson, who co-created the 'Dragon Warriors' game.
The Club has a regular gaming night once a month designed to introduce the hobby to new players. Many of the members game in their own circles. Available to all members is the Club's game library. This includes some solo-play books and CD's, and board games 'Hero Quest' (plus supplements), 'Talisman' (plus supplements), 'Village of Fear' and the 'Boris Vallejo' game. RPG's in the library include 'Buck Rogers', Rolemaster', and a handful of 'Amazing Engine' books including the wonderful 'Tabloid!'
The Peterborough SF Club tries to maintain good relations with the various other gaming groups that meet around the City.
GAMES UPDATE '99
This year the Club has engaged in many different gaming activities. At the very beginning of the year we became technical advisors for a local theatre group's production of Alan Ayckbourn's Wildest Dreams. The play, performed at the start of February both locally and in Germany, features a group of misfits who play a bizarre role-playing game. Whilst the gaming elements did not ring true, the cast were taken through a game of Talisman to give them an introduction to gaming mechanics. The Club also gave them some posters to use on part of the set and leant some tee-shirts for one of the cast to wear.
In April Alex Stewart was the guest of the Club. Alex had written articles for gaming magazines and run demos at shows. He'd also had some dealings with Games Workshop as a potential novelist.
The ninth Fantasy Fair in May had demo's by Equilibrium Games, Stamford Adventurer Society, Peterborough Role-Gamers, the local Vikings and others.
The Club's gaming library has expanded with copies of (amongst others), Kingmaker, the Games Inventors Handbook, Citadel Combat Cards, the Star Trek Trivia Video, Prince Valiant - the Story Telling Game and a handful of Fabled Lands books.
Space Wars - Game rules
Chaos Trail Interactive Fiction - PBM Game
