A MISSING TALE FROM THE MABINOGION
By Cardinal Cox
At the appointed time when the planets aligned themselves as the sage had proscribed, Gallgoid, (called by some The Killer), started the black ritual, He drew the triple circle of blood, milk and flour upon the cleared floor, beyond this the fire flickered in the chalk triangle, Midnight approached and the bandit 'Gallgoid intoned the evocation to the Lords of the four Quarters, asking their leave to lift that eternal tapestry which separates this world from the one beyond, Now the fire began to dim down to its embers, so that any in the woods around the mountain would be incapable of seeing this beacon, Then Gallgoid threw the corpses of the brindle puppies into the glowing coals.
Suddenly the fire exploded into flames over twelve feet tall. This caused Gallgoid to cower back, trying to protect himself with a cloak over his arm. Inside the unearthly flames three figures stood as black silhouettes. The sons of Gwawrddur had come. One of the newcomers spoke words which sounded as though maggots crawled across them.
"Gallgoid of Cantre'r Gwaelod, why have you called myself and my brothers?"
"To reave upon the farmsteads, to loot the villages, to gather the wealth of the valleys to me."
"And you know that there are certain geis upon us against treading upon this world?"
"Of course my noble knights, For you Duach who's face no mortal may see, a fine mask of polished bronze", with this Gallgoid threw to the first demon its prize. "To you Brathach, who's putriescent stench no mortal may smell, a surcoat of silver thread with bags upon it. Each contain herbs to disguise and contain your odour", so to the second he threw the garment. "And to you Nerthach, who's voice no mortal may hear, a bridal of gold to keep your jaws together", so to the third denizen of hell he passed the tool to ensure its existence upon this plane. The three ghoul-like figures now stepped from the fire which died as they left it.
"Now lord Gallgoid," said Duach from behind his mask, "let us bring death to this land."
The three then rode forth, projecting fear into the hearts of the simple folk, and they became known as the masters of corruption. At one place Duach was ambushed by archers, having more projectiles embedded within him than Edmund at his martyrdom. To this Duach merely giggled whilst using his sword to decapitate his assailants. At another place Brathach laughed whilst ripping the entrails from an innkeepers daughter. And when Nerthach oversaw the burning of Craig Gwrtheyn he could only grin, but the mortification of his body however meant that more teeth could be seen than was normal. And the tears of the people grew from a stream to a river.
The unhappiness of the people finally reached the witch known as the white Hag who with her acolyte decided to rid the land of the trio. The Hag brewed her cauldron and anointed Gwenwledyr. Next the Hag recited the Fith-Fath.
"Will I make a magic cloud on thee ?
By Mary of the augury,
By Bride of the corslet,
By Salome of the vails,
From sheep from ram,
From goat from buck,
From fox from wolf,
From sow from boar,
From hind from stag,
From dog from cat,
From fish from fowl,
From cow from horse,
From man from woman,
From lad from maid,
And from little child,
Till I again return."
The now invisible Gwenwledyr strode out. Duach and his horde were riding across the plain when the young witch saw them. Gwenwledyr took a handful of dust and blew upon it. The storm that this summoned they could not out run even though they tried. The horses stumbled and reared as the clouds of choking soil surrounded them, and the straps upon Duach's mask weakened so that it was carried away. Now the men saw the decaying flesh. What happened next they could not say for they had been struck blind, but when the storm finished, Duach was not to be found.
Brathach and his followers rode through the surf. Their route beneath the cliffs was towards a port they wished to plunder. The waves receded and the sand broadened for the tide was going out. One man happened to glance out to sea and saw what he believed to be only a cloud, but this cloud grew and came towards them. It was the crest of a great wave, it towered over them and fell with such force that the horses broke their limbs and were swept away. With them also went Brathach's surcoat and his followers caught a whiff of the long dead denizens of Hell. What happened next was never properly explained because they had to mime the entire tale, and their movements would then become incomprehensible, as all were struck dumb. Gwenwledyr left them wet beneath the cliffs.
She found Nerthach in his camp asleep. Her invisibility meant that entering it had been easy. Nerthach's tent stood in the centre and when she entered it she found him with his head upon the body of a goat. She went to him and loosened the buckles upon his golden straps. Then waking he spoke the word.
Some say that then a bolt of fire descended from the sky. Others claim the earth opened up. Still some say that a mighty hunchback was amongst them, he grabbed Nerthach and swallowed him whole. Getting them to tell their tale was difficult as all had been struck deaf, all at the same time, after hearing the word that was etched upon their souls.
"SISTER".
